Piazza dei Miracoli

Piazza dei Miracoli of PisaWorld Heritage Site

From Grand Hotel Duomo Pisa, the gaze immediately turns towards the architectural magic of Piazza dei Miracoli with its famous bell tower overlooking the sky. Piazza dei Miracoli, majestic and beautiful, with its Baptistery, the Duomo, the Cemetery, and the famous Tower of Pisa has been the very essence of the city for centuries.
It was thanks to a book by Gabriele d'Annunzio entitled "Forse che sì forse che no" (Maybe yes, maybe no) that it became famous as Piazza dei Miracoli, since for d'Annunzio considered the magnificent buildings of the square were true miracles of art and beauty.

From the baptistery to the cemetery, an allegory of human life

The area of the square has a very ancient history, but this square begins to be as we see it today at about the middle of the year 1000. In fact, it was in 1063 that the new Duomo was founded, later named Santa Maria Maggiore. In those years Tuscany experienced a cultural and artistic pyrotechnic growth and the construction of the new baptistery dedicated to Saint John who baptised Jesus Christ, began a short time later. The square does not have a casual conformation: its monuments retrace the fundamental phases of a Christian's life, representing the allegory of life itself. The Baptistery represents birth, the Duomo represents life, the Campo Santo represents death, but the fulcrum of the square is represented by the most famous Leaning Tower in the world.
